This first volume tells how Lewis Davenport, at the age of 16, founded his business in a highly competitive market. How that business prospered and ultimately became one of the most recognizable names in magic. In addition he and succeeding generations were magical performers, so interwoven into the story is how they developed their acts and interacted with leading magicians and events. The story calls upon unique archive material acquired from the likes of The Servais LeRoy Company, Chung Ling Soo, Maskelyne’s, Will Goldston, Arnold De Biere, Okito, Cardini, Kalanag, The Great Levante, Murray and many others. The second volume , The Lost Legends in The Davenport Story series unveils three hitherto unpublished works by eminent authors who were close personal friends of the family. These works were only recently discovered during research for this series.
The first by Robert Harbin, ‘Magic Marches On,’ was acquired by Davenports in 1946. Initially its non publication was mainly due to manpower shortages in the immediate aftermath of the war then, with the sudden passing of Gilly, the manuscript was genuinely lost. It was not until 1996 whilst researching this series of books that it was discovered amongst Gilly’s papers. This work includes 42 never-before-published tricks, illusions and escapes. Among the ingenious magical novelty effects are Glass and Cloth Eating, a Canon Ball Production and a completely new method for the classic Clock Dial trick. There are 14 new illusions, and one, ‘The Middle Bit’ ingeniously incorporates five different effects.
The second, Edward Victor’s lost fourth book ‘With Magic Hands,’ adds to his famous trilogy and thus completes his series. Again ill luck conspired against its publication. At the time he sold it to Gilly Davenport, Gilly was an ill man and was to pass away shortly afterwards. The manuscript was then lost amongst the heap of papers in his private office at home. Finally, the last work ‘Mystia’ or ‘The World of Magic’ is by the accomplished author and inventor G. W. Hunter. This was written at the end of the 1880′s and in this work We are convinced that to have been able to describe how these superb effects were done Hunter must have had access back stage. It was probably because of this espionage that he resisted publishing or parting with this work until shortly before his passing in 1939. A Two Person Silk-To-Egg Routine with a Surprise DOUBLE Climax!
The Effect: The magician takes a silk and places it into his hand. One magical gesture and the silk is now an egg! The silk is shown to have magically transported to the magician’s pocket! A true classic piece of coin magic made by Johnson products. Done with a half dollar and an English Penny. You clearly show the half dollar and English penny in your hand and then remove the English penny and place it in your pocket. Open your hand and the penny is back with the half. Now you remove the half dollar and place it in your pocket. Open the hand and the half dollar is now back. Now you cleanly place the half on the table and show that your hand only contains the penny. The half is again placed in the pocket and again returns to the hand. Finally you give the spectator a choice of either coin. You remove a coin from the hand and show it very cleanly and place it in your pocket. The hand is opened and the other coin has vanished. This is the Johnson model using the “expanded” half dollar gimmick rather than the “cut down” half. This enables you to use the gimmick in other half dollar effects.

DAVENPORT STORY by Roy Fergus-$150.00
The Life and Times of a Magical Family 1881-1939 – Davenports reveal in spectacular detail, secrets gathered over 110 years as dealers, performers and hoarders of magical memorabilia. This first volume tells how Lewis Davenport, at the age of 16, founded his business in a highly competitive market. How that business prospered and ultimately became one of the most recognizable names in magic. In addition he and succeeding generations were magical performers, so interwoven into the story is how they developed their acts and interacted with leading magicians and events. The story calls upon unique archive material acquired from the likes of The Servais LeRoy Company, Chung Ling Soo, Maskelyne’s, Will Goldston, Arnold De Biere, Okito, Cardini, Kalanag, The Great Levante, Murray and many others. Other volumes are to follow and the second in the series, ‘The Lost Legends’ will include Robert Harbin’s unpublished ‘Magic Marches On,’ Edward Victor’s lost book ‘With Magic Hands’ and as a bonus, a brilliant unpublished work by G. W. Hunter, ‘The World of Magic.’ Volume One of ‘The Davenport Story’ is hard bound with color dust cover and has 441 pages with over 500 illustrations including 16 full pages of color. DAVENPORT STORY VOLUME TWO by Roy Fergus-$150.00
The second volume , The Lost Legends in The Davenport Story series unveils three hitherto unpublished works by eminent authors who were close personal friends of the family. These works were only recently discovered during research for this series.
The first by Robert Harbin, ‘Magic Marches On,’ was acquired by Davenports in 1946. Initially its non publication was mainly due to manpower shortages in the immediate aftermath of the war then, with the sudden passing of Gilly, the manuscript was genuinely lost. It was not until 1996 whilst researching this series of books that it was discovered amongst Gilly’s papers. This work includes 42 never-before-published tricks, illusions and escapes. Among the ingenious magical novelty effects are Glass and Cloth Eating, a Canon Ball Production and a completely new method for the classic Clock Dial trick. There are 14 new illusions, and one, ‘The Middle Bit’ ingeniously incorporates five different effects.
The second, Edward Victor’s lost fourth book ‘With Magic Hands,’ adds to his famous trilogy and thus completes his series. Again ill luck conspired against its publication. At the time he sold it to Gilly Davenport, Gilly was an ill man and was to pass away shortly afterwards. The manuscript was then lost amongst the heap of papers in his private office at home. There are chapters on Sleights with Cards with a Straight Deck and with Prepared Cards together with new routines for the Cut & Restored Rope and Cups & Balls feature plus new effects with a paddle and other novelties.
Finally, the last work ‘Mystia’ or ‘The World of Magic’ is by the accomplished author and inventor G. W. Hunter. This was written at the end of the 1880′s and in this work We are convinced that to have been able to describe how these superb effects were done Hunter must have had access back stage. It was probably because of this espionage that he resisted publishing or parting with this work until shortly before his passing in 1939. The author analyses and reveals the secrets of the tricks of 36 leading magical acts in an era where innovative presentation was of the highest order. Acts include those of de Kolta, (with actual drawings of his Chair illusion set up), Maskelyne, Kellar, Bertram and Alexander Herrmann. The last chapter holds a number of surprises.
The front cover of the volume replicates a publicity photograph of Harbin which was inscribed ‘To George and Family – Robert Harbin 1946.’ George of course, was his friend Gilly Davenport. This photograph was taken at the same time as the manuscript was purchased by the Davenport family.

HUGARDS ANNUAL 1937, 1938, 1939 by Jean Hugard-$40.00
Jean Hugard (1871-1959) was one of magic’s most gifted and prolific writers, as well as a successful performer of wide experience. For Max Holden he wrote two “Annuals”, covering the years 1937-1939. Both books have become hard to find and are conveniently reprinted under one cover here. Both contain a wide variety of practical material, from close up with cards and coins, to full stage illusions. Highlights include Hugard’s own routines for catching a bullet, the floating ball, Danny Dew’s Walking through a String of Beads, and Ten Ichi’s water fountain trick, which was featured by Thurston and Dante to great effect. Sleights, gimmicks, and fully scripted routines are all hear, truly “something for everyone”, in addition to being a great historical picture of magic during the golden age at the very end of vaudeville. CHINESE STICKS DVD by John Fedko-$12.00
A How to guide to the Chinese Sticks!
Two ornate sticks with tassels hanging from them are introduced side by side. One of the tassels is short and the other is very long. By pulling down on the short tassel the long tassel goes up and vice versa. It is obvious that the sticks are connected, but you open them out into a “V” formation to prove your audience wrong. Again one tassel goes up as the other is pulled. Your audience assumes that the sticks are connected where they touch each other at the tip of the “V,” but you separate the sticks. Even when a stick is held in each hand, one tassel goes up as the other is pulled creating the illusion that each tassel is connected to the other when they are clearly not. After some magic words the magician is able to make both tassels retract into the sticks.

You show the book and the 4 cards face down on the table of the fortune teller. Explain that when you met her, she made you cut the cut and take 4 cards too. Like the spectator did (Show again that the cards are different).
Ask the spectator to turn the first card in front of him on the table. Open the book and start to open the pages (slowly one by one). The card of the fortune teller is the same than the one he chose! Ask him to turn face up his second card. It matches too! And remember, the spectator cut the deck himself!
The third card is turned face up too and matches the book as the fourth card. Unbelievable! The 4th card matches!
Explain that the fortune teller asked you to choose one of the 4 cards that are on the table. Ask the spectator to choose only one card, the cards he likes. It’s a totally free choice!
Let’s suppose he chooses the King of Diamonds.
Show the book to the spectator and the crystal ball on it. Show that when you turn the pages very fast, there is smoke in the crystal ball, and then a card appears, face down… and the cards is now face up and it’s … the King of Diamonds!

RABBIT IN THE HAT PUPPET-$75.00
Here is one of the cutest rabbit in hat puppets I have seen. The classic “Charles Out of My Hat” has long been a classic for kid shows. Now here is a large and showy soft rabbit in hat puppet with the cutest face. Kids LOVE this type of thing. Large soft top hat is reversible so that the hat can be used with two different colorful designs. The rabbit is a nice large hand puppet with big eyes, silver whiskers, and a big pink nose. Just place your hand through the hole in the back of the hand, insert your hand in the puppet and it seems to come alive. Have the bunny do card tricks out of the hat, have dialogue with you or the kids, etc. Rabbit is removable by velcro for dry cleaning. Since it is completely soft and pliable, simply shove the whole thing into your case when you are through. The kids in your audience will fall in love with this fella. Great price on a great item. This is NOT a cheap import. Each unit is hand made here in the United States.

LOTA BOWL by Morrissey Magic-$33.00
I used a Lota Bowl for many years in my stage act and it never failed to draw gasps and laughter from the audience. One of the oldest effects in magic and still one of the best. They talk about this long after your show is over.
A 6″ high aluminum bowl full of water is emptied into a bucket or other receptacle. Every time the magician goes back to the bowl, it again fills with liquid and is dumped out. This can be repeated a dozen times throughout your show. A great running gag with plenty of mystery

DISECTO by Abbott’s Magic-$175.00
Abbotts “DISECTO” provides mystery, entertainment, ingenuity and quality construction. Show the spectators how the “DISECTO” works by cutting three carrots; one where the victims hand is inserted, one above the hand and one below the hand. With the blade in full view of all, the victims hand is now inserted in the “DISECTO” and held in place with the locking pieces attached for that purpose. A carrot is placed in the top hole, another is placed in the bottom hole and a lighted cigar or cigarette is placed in the opening alongside the victims hand.
Slowly and deliberately the magician forces the blade through the first carrot, cutting it cleanly into two pieces – the blade still being visible. Even as the blade is forced through the victims wrist (and before it cuts through the lighted cigar of cigarette) the performer asks the victim if he or she can feel the blade and, strangely enough, they will say, “Yes!”, for they do feel the blade!
As the blade passes through the victims wrist, at the same time it cuts through the lighted cigarette and then through the carrot in the lower hole. We unquestionably guarantee that there is no danger to the spectator – nothing can go wrong. Do “DISECTO” within six inches of the spectators and with the audience all around you. It is foolproof. Perfect for the largest of stages and any type audience.

FRENCH ARM CHOPPER by Mak Magic-$150.00
A U.F. Grant original illusion. Any spectators arm is placed in the chopper. A large solid blade is forced down through the wrist. The spectators actual hand (not a dummy) is seen to drop off and fall in the bag below! One of the most copied effects in magic, U. F. Grant invented the French Arm Chopper. This is the original and still the best! This is a big trick. It looks wonderful on the stage, but can be used at a party just as well. Packs flat, and still light in weight for easy transporting. It is entirely mechanical. Yes…the blade is solid. The blade is not switched and the blade does go clear down. Any spectator may be used. After five animals cards are discarded, the magician decides that since he is the star of the show, they will spell the word “star.” He ends up with a clown card and both of his helpers end up holding star cards. They are the stars of the show

is red with gold Chinese characters. The hinged front door has an ornate gold Dragon. A slate is shown and you sketch an outline picture of a rabbit. The picture is inserted in a slot in the back of the box. You open the front door of the box and show the picture is really there. The box is closed. Now when you open the box,

AMAZING SHRINKING AND GROWING HEAD ILLUSION by Bruce Kalver-$40.00
Now made in a more durable plastic disc. A large disc with a black & white swirl type design is attached to a standard electric screwdriver (available at your local hardware store). You tell your audience to stare at the disc as it begins to spin. After staring at the spinning disc for ten seconds or so, you pull, the disc away and ask your audience to stare at your head. Here is a poker deal demonstration that will knock their socks off! The performer shuffles the deck and deals 5 hands of poker. He wins with a full house. Performer now plays one on one with one of the spectators with only ten cards. Performer turns over two cards at a time face up allowing the spectator to pick either card for his hand. You fan out six cards to show three face-up Fours and three face-down cards. The cards are turned over and re-fanned to show three Tens. An “unknown” card is removed from your pocket and inserted into the fan. You now deal the Fours face down to a spectator while you hold the Tens and the “unknown” card. Your cards are squared, turned end-over-end three times, and re-fanned. The “unknown” card is pocketed. The Tens are now gone-faces and backs of blank-face cards are shown! A masterful routine of visual magic! Six cards, shown blank on both sides, are dealt out in pairs. As each pair is picked up and pushed through the performer’s hand, winning cards for various games are printed visually:

He said “Go ahead, just remove any three cards from that red backed deck and we’ll use those to complete my deck.” The freely selected red cards are then added to the blue deck. He then realized that there on the table, in an envelope were the three blue cards originally missing from the deck. He removes the three missing blue cards from the envelope and they are the exact duplicates of three freely selected cards from the red deck!! This is a self-working miracle and the three predicted cards can be different every time!! This effect is right out of David’s Magic Castle Act and is a s strong an opening effect as you can get.

The Process
